The film Super Mario Bros. (1993) featured two Oscar-nominated actors: Bob Hoskins (UK) in the lead role and Dennis Hopper (USA) as the villain King Koopa.
Both were nominated at the 59th Academy Awards (30 March 1987):
- Hoskins was nominated in the category of Best Actor for his role in Mona Lisa (1986).
- Hopper got his nod in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in the film Hoosiers (1986). This was actually his second Oscar nod, but his first as an actor: he was co-writer on Easy Rider (1969) which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 42nd Academy Awards (7 April 1970)
