The largest congregation of turtles (or, indeed, of any chelonian – turtles, tortoises, and terrapins) ever recorded took place on a 10-km stretch of beach at Gahirmatha, in Odisha (formerly Orissa), eastern India, in 1991. This was when approximately 610,000 specimens of olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) were counted nesting here. Each February, the turtles emerge from the sea after dark to lay their eggs (over 50 million) on the beach, and are back in the sea by dawn.
