Highest box office film gross worldwide for a single year

In terms of global box-office takings, 2006 was the most successful year for movie making. According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) international receipts for 2006 grew 11% on 2005 to $25.8 billion (£13.3 billion). Most of the growth occurring outside the USA, where receipts totalled a record $16.3 billion (£8.4 billion), were up 14 per cent from the 2005 total. The highest grossing movie of the year was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (USA 2006), which took over $1.06 billion (£543 million) worldwide.
