Highest-grossing musical at the global box office

Walt Disney's live-action remake of its classic 1991 animation Beauty and the Beast, which premiered at Spencer House in London, UK, on 23 February 2017, had taken US$1,263,714,165 at the global box office as 11 January 2018, according to movie financial intelligence service The Numbers (www.the-numbers.com). The blockbuster musical, starring Emma Watson (UK, b. 15 April 1990) as Belle and Dan Stevens (UK, b. 10 October 1982) as Beast, beat out the previous record holder, Mamma Mia! (2008), which now ranks second with a lifetime gross of US$615,748,877 (£455,307,000).

A sequel to Mamma Mia! – Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – was announced on 19 May 2017.
