The farthest distance driven in a single Martian day is 319.786 m (1,049 ft 2 in), which was achieved by the Perseverance rover on 14 February 2022 (Sol 351 of its mission) in the Jezero Crater.
Although Perseverance is built to the same basic specification as the Curiosity rover (which landed on Mars in 2012), Perseverance has a number of upgrades over its older sibling. The most significant of these are the upgrades to the navigation cameras and onboard computers. The improved imagery and processing power is leveraged by a new system called "Autonav", which allows mission controllers to give Perseverance broad instructions for where to drive, but leave the specifics of wheel control and placement up to the rover. It is this Autonav system that has made these long drives possible, as they allow Perseverance to cover greater distances than could be reasonably planned out and transmitted from Earth.
