The Life of a Showgirl by Taylor Swift (USA) crushed her home country’s all-time first-week sales record by shifting 4.002 million equivalent album units – comprising 3.479 million traditional album sales and 522,600 streaming equivalent albums (equating to 680.9 million on-demand official streams) – to debut at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 on 18 October 2025. The colossal figures, reported by data-tracking firm Luminate for the sales week of 3–9 October, dwarf the 3.482 million equivalent album units (or 3.378 million traditional album sales) registered by Adele’s 25 album in the week following its release on 20 November 2015.
The Life of a Showgirl, Swift’s 12th original studio album and 16th overall, is her 15th US No.1 (the most by a solo artist; only The Beatles – 19 – have more) and her 15th album to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 (the most by any artist, breaking a three-way tie with Jay-Z and Drake).
Showgirl is Swift’s unrivalled eighth studio album to register at least 1 million-selling traditional sales week (physical copies, including CD and vinyl, and digital) on the Billboard 200, after Speak Now (1.047 million on 13 November 2010), Red (1.208 million on 10 November 2012), 1989 (1.287 million on 15 November 2014), reputation (1.216 million on 2 December 2017), Midnights (1.140 million on 5 November 2022), 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (1.359 million on 11 November 2023) and The Tortured Poets Department (1.914 million on 4 May 2024).
Showgirl’s 12 tracks – led by “The Fate of Ophelia” – entered the Billboard Hot 100 at positions 1–12 on 18 October 2025. It’s the first time in chart history that an entire album’s tracks had lined up consecutively at the top of the weekly listing.
The Life of a Showgirl is not only the fastest-selling album ever in the US, but one of the fastest-selling albums worldwide, racking up 5.5 million global album units in the first week. According to reports, only Michael Jackson’s Dangerous (9 million in 1991) and Bad (7 million in 1987) and Adele’s 25 (5.7 million in 2015) have exceeded that figure.
