The fastest 50 m freestyle swim with motor neuron disease is 36.10 seconds, achieved by Mark O'Brien (UK) in Luton, UK, on 1 September 2024.

Mark also achieved the 100 m freestyle record on the same day, in Dublin, Ireland! He has previously achieved the record for the longest distance swimming non-stop in open water with motor neuron disease.

He took on this challenge to "inspire those living with motor neuron disease (MND) and terminal illness that you can still make a positive difference." He was also raising awareness of motor neuron disease and funds for charities supporting people with MND.

Mark hopes his records can leave a lasting legacy to his children to never give up even when the odds are stacked against you.
