The highest MLB career batting average is .372, achieved by Josh Gibson (USA) while playing in the Negro Leagues for the Memphis Red Sox, Homestead Grays, and Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1930 to 1946.

On 28 May 2024, Major League Baseball announced that it had integrated Negro Leagues statistics into its records, supplanting the previous mark of .367 by Tyrus Raymond Ty Cobb who played for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Athletics from 1905 to 1928.
