Ahead of the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards on 27 February 2022, Cate Blanchett (Australia) bagged her seventh career nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, as a cast member of Netflix’s apocalyptic comedy Don’t Look Up (USA, 2021). In the film, Blanchett played Brie Evantee, talk-show co-host of The Daily Rip. Previously, she had been nominated for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2002), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2003), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004 – winner), The Aviator (2005), Babel (2007) and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2009).
No other actor has received as many as four nominations in consecutive years, as Blanchett did in 2002–05. Four actors have six nominations in this category: Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt. DiCaprio and Streep scored their sixth nominations for Don’t Look Up in 2022. Trivia: Blanchett revealed that she wore fake teeth and a wig in Don’t Look Up, as COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time prevented her from hiring a make-up artist.
