The Visible Human Project is led by Dr. Victor Spitzer of the University of Colorado. The aim of the project is to create a virtual anatomy "text book." Ultimately this digitised virtual body will be part of a medical simulator on which doctors and medical students will learn surgical techniques, in the manner of a pilot learning to fly by using an airplane simulator. To create these virtual humans, Dr. Spitzer and his team had to perform the most detailed human dissection. The "Visible Man" is a real cadaver that was sliced into 1,878 slices. The thickness of each cut was 1,000 microns (1 millimetre). The "Visible Woman" cadaver was sliced into 5,189 slices, (330 microns thick[0.33 millimetres]). Each layer of the sliced cadaver was photographed with a digital camera and stored in a computer. Eventually the recreation of the sliced images will form a minutely detailed 3–D virtual human body.
