The longest-running United Nations peacekeeping mission is the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO), which has been in place since June 1948. UNTSO's headquarters are in Jerusalem, but it maintains military observation posts throughout the Middle East.
This was also the first UN peacekeeping operation. The longest running peacekeeping force with elements of infantry forces is UNFICYP, the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, which was established by the Security Council in March 1964 to prevent recurrence of fighting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The strength of UNFICYP in November 1998 was 1,273 troops, as well as civilian police monitors.
