Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (USA, 1969) won nine awards – from 10 nominations – at the 24th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) on 4 March 1971. Starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Katharine Ross, the Western won Best Film, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Redford), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Ross), Best Direction (George Roy Hill), Best Screenplay (William Goldman), Best Cinematography (Conrad Hall), Best Editing (John C Howard/Richard C Meyer), Best Original Music (Burt Bacharach) and Best Sound (David Dockendorf/William Edmondson/Don Hall). The film’s only nomination that went unrewarded was a second nod in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category for winner Redford’s co-star Paul Newman.
Historical drama The Killing Fields (UK, 1984) won eight film BAFTAs, while Cabaret (USA, 1972), Schindler’s List (USA, 1993), Slumdog Millionaire (UK, 2008), The King’s Speech (UK/Australia, 2010), The Artist (France, 2011), The Favourite (UK/Ireland/USA, 2018) and 1917 (UK/USA, 2019) took home seven awards each.
Made on a budget of $6 million (then £2.5 million), Butch Cassidy… took $102.3 million (then £42.9 million) at the US box office, according to the-numbers.com. Adjusted for inflation, the film’s takings were $787.4 million (£588.4 million) as of 2 March 2022.
