Youngest current head of state

The youngest head of state is Ibrahim Traoré (b. 14 March 1988), who came to power in Burkina Faso following a coup d'état in 2022. As of 18 November 2024, he is aged 36 years 249 days.

The Burkinabè military officer is the world's youngest serving president and head of state. Following a coup, in which interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was ousted, Traoré was selected to lead the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration and run the country. In 2023, he survived an attempt to overthrow him by dissidents in the country's armed forces, resulting in the government extending his presidency by five years.
