Esther Vergeer (Netherlands) won 23 Grand Slam doubles titles in wheelchair tennis: nine at the Australian Open (2002-04, 2006-09, 2011-12), five at the French Open (2007-09, 2011-12), three at Wimbledon (2009-11) and six at the US Open (2005-07, 2009-11).
The Dutch ace also won 21 Grand Slam wheelchair singles titles – nine at the Australian Open (2002-04, 2006-09, 2011-12), six at the French Open (2007-12) and six at the US Open (2005-07, 2009-11) – and an unrivalled seven Paralympic gold medals in singles (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012) and doubles (2000, 2004, 2012) competition. Her total of 44 Grand Slam titles across singles and doubles equals the overall title count of Shingo Kunieda (Japan), who drew level with the Dutch ace by winning the Australian Open singles on 2 February 2020.
Remarkably, Vergeer ended her career in February 2013 on a winning streak of 470 matches, dating back to January 2003, in which time she lost just 18 sets. Between August 2004 and October 2006, she won 250 consecutive sets.
Vergeer was born in Woerden on 18 July 1981. She was left paralysed in 1990, after undergoing two operations to treat vascular disease of the spinal cord.
