Nicknamed Mão Santa (“Holy Hand”), Schmidt played in 33 games in four editions of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, which was known as the FIBA World Championship between 1950 and 2010. He made the All-Tournament Team in 1978, 1986 and 1990, finishing as tournament top scorer in the latter.
