The animal with the longest neck is the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), native to the dry savannah and open woodland areas of sub-Saharan Africa. A giraffe's neck accounts for around one-third of its total height, averaging 1.5–1.8 metres (5–6 feet) long. In the largest males, it can reach 2–3 metres (6 feet 6 inches–9 feet 10 inches).

The giraffe is also the tallest mammal (living), with adult males averaging between 4.6 and 5.5 metres (15 and 18 feet) tall.
