On 2 November 2016, the Chicago Cubs (USA) clinched the World Series with a dramatic 8–7 victory in Game 7 against the Cleveland Indians (USA) at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Indiana, USA. This ended one of the most celebrated title droughts in US sports. The Cubs’ last World Series victory came on 14 October 1908 – a gap of 108 years 19 days.

As of the end of the 2016 season, eight teams are still to win their first World Series – all were founded after the process of league expansion began in 1961.
