The first person to win a FIFA World Cup final as both a player and a coach is Brazil's Mário Zagallo (full name Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo, b. 9 August 1931). His first win came on 29 June 1958, when the 26-year-old forward scored the final goal in Brazil's 5–2 victory over hosts Sweden. He secured his second World Cup win in 1962, playing, but not scoring, in Brazil's 3–1 victory over Czechoslovakia. Having retired as a player shortly before the 1966 World Cup, he returned as a coach/manager in 1970, leading Brazil to its third victory in 12 years with a 4–1 win over Italy.

Although Zagallo is widely respected in Brazil as both a player and manager, his achievements have always been overshadowed by his contemporary Pelé, whom he played alongside in 1958 and 1962 and coached in 1970.
