The most followed man on Twitter/X is tech billionaire (and owner of the platform) Elon Musk (USA, b. South Africa). As of 19 February 2024, Musk has 173,149,588 followers – putting him comfortably ahead of former US president Barack Obama (with 131.9 m followers) and pop star Justin Bieber (111.2 m followers).

Unusually for such a high-profile celebrity, Musk does not appear to have a social media manager or publicist to oversee his account. The idiosyncratic and unpredictable nature of his posts, which can be on anything from surreal memes to the finer points of rocket engine design, has helped grow his following over the past five years.
