Brightest reflection nebula

M78 is a nebula in the constellation of Orion, and is part of the Orion Complex, which includes the Orion Nebula. M78 is around 1,600 light years away and, with an apparent magnitude of 8.3, is visible with binoculars under good viewing conditions. The nebula does not glow itself – rather, we see it as it reflects the light from nearby stars. M78 is almost four light years across. It was discovered in 1780 by French astronomer Pierre Méchain.
