Ten-time ladies' world champion Reanne Evans (UK) qualified for the televised stages of China's Wuxi Classic (17–23 June 2013) when she beat Thailand's Thepchaiya Un-Nooh 5–4 in a qualifying match at the South West Snooker Academy in Gloucester, UK, on 28 May 2013. Evans was scheduled to play world number two Neil Robertson in the first round of the tournament in China but was required to play an extra wildcard match at Wuxi City Sports Park Stadium, which she lost 5–2. When all 128 tour players took part in the Wuxi Classic qualifying round, at the South West Snooker Academy on 27–29 May 2013, it became the first snooker tournament to feature all players in the same round. It was the first event on the snooker calendar to adopt the WPBSA's new format, which means top 16 players are no longer guaranteed a place in the latter stages of ranking events. Evans' wildcard match took place on 17 June 2013. Her opponent was China's Zhu Yinghui and her 5-2 defeat denied her an opportunity to play the eventual winner of the tournament, Neil Robertson. "Well what a load of plop" was Evans' reaction after missing out on a match with Robertson.

World number one Mark Selby and 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy were the high-profile casualties of the qualifying round at the South West Snooker Academy. Ronnie O'Sullivan withdrew from the qualifying round for personal reasons.
