Anna Blinkova (Russia) beat Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) 6–4, 4–6, 7–6 (22–20) in the second round of the Australian Open on 18 January 2024, but only after a 42-point final-set tie-break. Blinkova advanced by converting her 10th match point on Rod Laver Arena, while third seed and 2023 Australian Open finalist Rybakina saw six match points of her own come and go.
At Spain’s Madrid Open on 19 May 1999, Tara Snyder took the first set of her second round match against Emmanuelle Gagliardi 7–6 (21–19). At 40 points, it held the record for the longest-ever tie-break in professional singles competition – male or female – for more than 24 years, until it was aced by the strength-sapping exploits of Blinkova and Rybakina at the first Grand Slam of 2024.
