Most frequent aviation accident category

The International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) currently recognizes three types of high-risk accident category: runway related safety events; loss of control in-flight; and controlled flight into terrain. According to its 2011 State of Global Aviation Safety Report, the most frequent category of aircraft accident over the period 2005–2010 was that related to runway safety, accounting for 59% of all accidents. However, the type of accident most likely to lead to fatalities, over the same period, was the loss of control in-flight occurrence category, which represents 29% of all fatalities – though only 4% of all accidents.
