Invented by Nikola Tesla around 1891, the Tesla coil is a method of generating high-voltage, low-current electricity. Tesla coils are most commonly used to produce impressive lightning displays at science museums and in science classes. The largest operational Tesla coil is the 130-kW, two-coil system mounted on top of a 12-m (38-ft) sculpture at Gibbs Farm, Kaipara Harbour, New Zealand. Created as a collaboration between sculptor Eric Orr and high-voltage engineer Greg Leyh, the Electrum Project – as the sculpture is known – is a fusion of art and technology that brings the phenomenon of lightning within the reach of everyone.
