The world's biggest species of true fly or dipteran ("two-winged") is the giant mydas fly Gauromydas heros. Native to the dry forests of eastern, central and southern Brazil, the females are bigger than the slimmer, shorter males, and the biggest specimen ever recorded is an adult female housed in the collection of the Museu de Zoologia at Brazil's University of São Paulo. It measures 6.23 cm long, with a wingspan of 11.67 cm.
