At 10:18 am PDT (17:18 UTC) on 18 October 2012 an estimated 9.4 million people took part in the fifth annual Great California ShakeOut. The event was designed to encourage Californians to practise their preparedness for a major earthquake in the seismically active state. Participants practiced the "Drop, Cover and Hold On" drill, with many of them following instructions broadcast on over 70 television and radio stations across California.
