First manmade object to break the sound barrier

The origins of the bullwhip are unknown and debated. They are famous for their design which allows them to be cast in such a way that a sharp cracking noise is produced. This noise occurs because the tip of the whip has broken the speed of sound which, in dry air at 20 C is 342.3 metres per second.
