Lady Gaga’s (USA, b. Stefani Germanotta) Born this Way is the fastest-selling digital album in Nielsen SoundScan history (i.e. since March 1991, when accurate sales data was introduced in the US), generating 662,000 first-week sales to debut at No.1 on 11 June 2011. Born this Way – the first album to debut in a social network game (GagaVille) – sold 1.1 million copies in total in its first week, a figure that was boosted by online retailer Amazon’s controversial decision to sell the album for 99 cents.
The fastest-selling digital album by a female before Born this Way was Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (278,000 units sold in week one, 13 November 2010).
Note attempt ID 125401, which is a similar record but for a female artist only. Born this Way's total beats any album's first-week digital sales.
