First comic

While the record of the first comic is hotly contested, most experts agree that Swiss cartoonist Rodolphe Töpffer’s Histoire de Mr. Vieux-Bois ("Adventures of Mr Wooden-Head", aka Les Amours de Mr. Vieux-Bois), created in 1827 and first published a decade later, is the strongest contender. The story, published in North America in 1842 as The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck, consisted of around 30 pages of comic strip. Each page was cut into six panels and had a narrative caption beneath each drawing.

According to the British Library, Funny Folks (1874–94) became the first British publication to meet what would probably be the generally accepted definition of a comic.
